Author Hanna Hymans Ostroff approached me with a story about Aya, a curious little panda and her encounter with a kind Buddhist monk. It was a challenge to take on the project as it would be the first time to illustrate an animal as a main character, but I enjoyed capturing her expressions and playfulness.

My first book cover for young readers! It was a pleasure working with Susan and learning about Berkeley in the 1920’s. Inspiration for the cover design was found in the friendship shared by the two main characters whose relationship is strengthened as they are faced with anti-Japanese prejudices.
